The ocean remains the largest space on the planet that we cannot penetrate easily to discover its dynamics. Ocean observing technologies enable that discovery.
BCIC has supported the development of the world's first undersea observatories as both an advisor and proponent. As well, the world's first Ocean Observatories - The North East Pacific Timed Undersea Networked Experiment (NEPTUNE) and Victoria Experimental Network under the Sea (VENUS) - are now being built in B.C. These observatories have created the capability to conduct research that has catapulted B.C. into the forefront of Ocean Science. They also allow the industry to construct and deploy undersea technology that is not available in any other jurisdiction.
BCIC has collaborated with other agencies to assess, report, advise and facilitate the vast technology transfer opportunities and economic development that results from such projects and to assist the marine technology industry in their realization.
