Reaching New Depths in Underwater Innovation

Tim Stevens, a former Canadian Military Clearance Diver, never thought he would one day lead the development of an underwater technology that could make the deep blue seas a safer place to be.

Tim Stevens, armed with a passion to improve underwater safety, joined inventor and scientist Robert Rowe in 2005 to form Master Underwater Technologies Inc. (MUTI). Located on Vancouver Island, the two partners brought together extensive diving and underwater experience with scientific innovations to develop underwater technologies.

High School Students Transform Everyday Objects into Innovative Technologies

The official launch of the BCIC Young Innovator Scholarship, titled Idea MashUp, was celebrated on May 20, 2008 at D.P. Todd Secondary School in Prince George, where over 150 high school students engaged in a challenge that had them dashing into a ‘mash up' scrum to gather materials for their new technology ideas. Working in teams, students demonstrated what possibilities the future could hold by converging everyday items like skateboards, phones and goggles into new innovations. The exercise demonstrated the creative structure of the program and how it could be implemented in the coming school year.

13 BC-China Projects to Share $4M

Thirteen projects partnering B.C. and China have been selected to share $4-million thanks to the Innovation and Commercialization Strategic Development Program (ICSD). The ICSD Program was developed by BCIC and the People's Republic of China's Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) to develop research and technology for the shared economic benefit of B.C. and China.

Microalgae to Fuel B.C.’s Diesel Needs

Microalgae farms have great potential for meeting B.C.'s diesel needs, as they can produce substantially larger amounts of oil on less land, compared to sources like soybeans and canola. For this reason, BCIC is leading a partnered project to further investigate this potential and its commercial viability.
