Dr. Larry Goldenberg is a clinical scientist, surgeon, and educator dedicated to improving quality of life for citizens in British Columbia and the world. He has contributed significantly to championing research by raising funds to create the infrastructure for the state of the art Prostate Centre at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH). As Co-Founder and Co-Director, Goldenberg has established the Centre's role as a leading national Centre for Excellence in prostate research, education and healthcare delivery programs. He also spearheaded the creation of the Department of Urological Sciences at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and pioneered the concept of intermittent hormone therapy for the management of prostate cancer, a treatment option regarded as the standard worldwide. His clinical and research work have garnered him an international reputation in raising awareness and excellence in prostate cancer research and treatment. Goldenberg's vision and leadership continue to play a pivotal role in advancing British Columbia as a global leader in urology and prostate cancer research and treatment.

Work and Achievements

  • Pioneered clinical development of a low dose antiandrogen/DES protocol for prostate cancer treatment.
  • Co-developed clinical protocols for neoadjuvant hormonal therapy prior to radical prostatectomy.
  • One of the first to test the efficacy of intermittent androgen suppression (IAS) versus continuous hormonal therapy in men with advanced prostate cancer.
  • Current research involves the evaluation of the role of MRI/MRS in prostate cancer, the potential use of focal therapy, patient education and decision modeling, the introduction of daVinci robotic prostatectomy and a variety of new treatments for benign prostatic hyperplasia.
  • Currently leading the creation of a Mens Health Initiative of B.C.
  • His book, Prostate Cancer - All You Need to Know to Take an Active Part in Your Treatment, is considered one of the best reference sources for men with prostate disease in North America.
  • Has authored close to 300 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, videos and conference submissions and has been an invited speaker at over 400 conferences world-wide.
  • Founder of the Canadian Uro-Oncology Group, a cooperative and collaborative network of research institutions across Canada (1990).
  • Served as a Board member, Vice-President, President elect, President and Past-President of the Canadian Urological Association.
  • Inducted into the Order of British Columbia for his contributions to health care in B.C. (2006).
  • Fellow of the Canadian Academic of Health Sciences (2006).
