Work and Achievements
- Pioneered clinical development of a low dose antiandrogen/DES protocol for prostate cancer treatment.
- Co-developed clinical protocols for neoadjuvant hormonal therapy prior to radical prostatectomy.
- One of the first to test the efficacy of intermittent androgen suppression (IAS) versus continuous hormonal therapy in men with advanced prostate cancer.
- Current research involves the evaluation of the role of MRI/MRS in prostate cancer, the potential use of focal therapy, patient education and decision modeling, the introduction of daVinci robotic prostatectomy and a variety of new treatments for benign prostatic hyperplasia.
- Currently leading the creation of a Mens Health Initiative of B.C.
- His book, Prostate Cancer - All You Need to Know to Take an Active Part in Your Treatment, is considered one of the best reference sources for men with prostate disease in North America.
- Has authored close to 300 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, videos and conference submissions and has been an invited speaker at over 400 conferences world-wide.
- Founder of the Canadian Uro-Oncology Group, a cooperative and collaborative network of research institutions across Canada (1990).
- Served as a Board member, Vice-President, President elect, President and Past-President of the Canadian Urological Association.
- Inducted into the Order of British Columbia for his contributions to health care in B.C. (2006).
- Fellow of the Canadian Academic of Health Sciences (2006).
