Previous Award Recipients
BC Science and Technology Champion
2003 - Dr. Roger Foxall, Executive Vice President Research and Founding President & CEO , Genome BC
Dr. Foxall is building the foundation for a vibrant, genomics-driven life sciences community in BC.Genome BC, the organization he co-founded, has already established partnerships between universities, research centres, governments, and the private sector, which are leading to discoveries in early-stage cancer, forestry, and salmon genomics.
Business/Education Partnership
1999 - John Bird, Simon Fraser University & James Ferguson, International Submarine Engineering Research
Dr. Bird and Mr. Ferguson have developed novel sonar, positioning systems and fully autonomous underwater vehicles for the scientific subsea research community, governments, and the commercial underwater survey industry.
Cecil Green Award
2003 - Dr. Norman Toms, Founder and Chief Technical Officer - Sierra Wireless
Dr. Toms helped establish BC as a global leader in wireless communications. His early recognition of a market need for wireless products, combined with his entrepreneurial acumen and management skills, has guided Sierra Wireless through ten years of growth, to the point where it now has products available in 25 countries on 45 wireless networks and reported over US $75 million in revenues.
Chairman's Award
2003 - Dr. John Grace, Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Faculty of Applied Science, UBC
Dr. Grace has distinguished himself as an educator, researcher, and innovator in his 35-year career as a leading authority on fluidization and chemical reaction engineering. His exploration of new clean energy technologies which use fluidized beds has resulted in major advances in the reduction of harmful emissions and in the efficient utilization of energy. Grace has also formed many industry/academic/private sector partnerships, published widely, secured several patents and mentored more than 60 graduate students.
Engineering & Applied Sciences
1995 - Jim Cavers, Simon Fraser University
Jim Cavers' research in signal processing has made him one of the world's authorities on wireless modem technology. His modem technology and digital radio designs are standard equipment in North American commercial aircrafts.
Eve Savory Award
2003 - Mr. Bruce Mohun, Producer/Director, Mohun's Moving Picture Company
Mr. Mohun's documentaries, series, and short films bring science into the homes of Canadians and expose them to subjects ranging from ethnobotany to nanotechnology.
Health Sciences
1995 - Max Cynader, University of British Columbia
Max Cynader has made many contributions to the study of neuroscience and his research has been instrumental in developing new approaches to the study of visual developments and in understanding the information transfer within the visual system, especially in the visual cortex. His research has played a key role in treating many eye disorders.
Industrial Innovation
2002 - Dr. Philip Hill, University of British Columbia
Currently the Senior Scientific Advisor at Westport Inc., Dr. Hill is being recognized for his innovative research that strives to balance the problem of fuel emissions and the benefits of diesel engines. An already world-renowned thermal scientist, he is an excellent role model for the science community in BC.
Natural Sciences
1994 - Peter Stetson, National Research Council's Dominion Astrophysical Observatory
His measurements of the ages and other propertise of globuar star clusters have set the standard to which theoretical models of ancient stars are compared. He had developed software that has vastly improved astronomers' ability to measure individual stars on digital images of dense star fields.
New Frontiers In Research
2002 - Dr. Jeff Young, University of British Columbia
A co-founder of Galian Photonics, Dr. Young is being recognized for his research contributions to the fields of optics, microelectronics and the study of planar photonic crystals (PPC). His work has positioned BC at the forefront of the new PPC field.
