Sea Lice Research

2004 - Sea Lice (AE 03/04-04)

2003 - Immediate Sea Lice ~ Pink Salmon Research In the Broughton Archipelago (BCARDC 02/03-03)

This RFP was issued to address research areas and gaps as identified at the Sea Lice Workshop (February 2003, Vancouver B.C.) and in the document entitled "Check List: Pink Salmon, Sea Lice and Net-pen Salmon Farming - Information Needs" prepared by Dr. Brian Riddell (Pacific Fisheries Resource Conservation Council). Projects accepted under this RFP must involve work on Pink salmon and sea lice in the Broughton in the spring of 2003. Example subjects, based on the timeframe based on the 2003 pink salmon out-migration, included:

  1. Evaluation of various areas in the Broughton Archipelago including areas in proximity to farms for sea lice presence or levels of infestation using sentinal cages or other methods.
  2. Evidence that a "corridor" free of farmed salmon is an effective management tool for pink salmon.
  3. Identification of natural hosts and reservoirs for sea lice.
  4. Evidence of the interaction between wild salmonids and salmon farms; whether the interaction is random or has an active feature.
